We will be having our last dance night for the year this Tuesday 8th December.  We have a special course in Rueda with outside teachers – Nikolai and Svettlana from Casino Royale.  Rueda is a popular dance at Salsa dance nights in Tromsø so it’s a great one to learn.  The course starts at 7:30pm and goes for 90mins.  Afterwards we are having a casual practice dance session with all the dances (including Salsa and Rueda) and the Casino Royale dancers will be joining us.  There will be nibbles and soft drink (brus) – if you want anything stronger the Driv bar will be open.

Everyone is welcome to join in the night – if they aren’t members of the student union the whole night will cost kr.50,- .  Everyone will be starting at square one with Rueda so complete beginners are welcome.  However, during the dance practice only a ’show and tell’ will be given as a reminder of the dances we have done – there will be no formal tuition.

This will be a great night to meet some of the local dancers in Tromsø as well as getting some practise in and learning a new dance – Rueda!

This is the last dance night for Swing and Foxtrot. Tonight we might also brush up a bit more on Salsa/Mambo for the following week.

Make sure you save Tuesday 8th as we have a special instructor coming in to teach us Rueda – a social form of Salsa. Then afterwards we are going to have a dance prac of everything that we have done this season. We will be concentrating on the Latin dances as some of the dancers from Casino Royale will be joining us.

So Tuesday 8th will be our last dance night for the year!

Rytmekurs med Jon-Eirik Boska med påfølgende Rueda / Salsa party! På kurset lærer du alt som er verdt å lære om rytmene i salsa, og får også muligheten til å prøve deg selv. Jon-Eirik har lang farstid med latinamerikansk musikk, og spiller blandt masse annet i Orquesta Salsa de Tromsø.

Rett etter kurset starter festen, hvor det blir dansing og gøy hele natta. Det vil bli mye Rueda de Casino, men selvfølgelig også mye “vanlig” salsa. Musikken styres av vår kjære DJ-Frost. Medbrakt drikke.

Rytmekurset har begrenset med plasser, så det gjelder å melde seg på tidlig. Prisen her er for både kurs og fest, bare festen koster kr 50,-

Here is a basic Foxtrot vid. They are doing the first two steps that we learnt last Tuesday and the last two steps are the ones we will be learning this Tuesday. (Video guy drives me crazy though – going in and out…lol.)

East Coast Swing
The couple are mainly doing the steps we did last Tuesday. The don’t do the first Underarm Turn for the Back Pass step – and we haven’t learnt the Alternate underarm yet – but we will . You’ll also notice that they rock back first. When you get into Swing more this will limit your starts whereas our start with the triple step first will enable you to be creative.

Tell one, tell all!

The main different between American Foxtrot and English is that American can break all the rules. (English Foxtrot is part of “International Ballroom” that has strict rules on how you are allowed to dance. Where’s the fun in that? )

American Foxtrot is ‘Fred Astaire’. In most of his movies he will break out some Foxtrot steps with the leading lady (typically with Ginger).

This Foxtrot is faster, has open steps and is very interpretative. Different styles accommodate different music – in class we will even change our Foxtrot style to Reggae music.

Here are some clips to give you an example of some styles:

Comp Style American Foxtrot: a little flashy…lol.

In the clip below, even though it’s a “comp” they are basically dancing just normal social American Foxtrot. This is what our smooth Foxtrot will look like (but I don’t know what the guy is doing with his hand up in the air all the time…lol – we won’t be doing that )

We will be learning the basic American swing. Here are some styles that use this Swing:

The Jive style of the East Coast Swing:

Did you notice anything about the guy? He is dancing with half an arm, so if he can do this so can a person with two arms

A HipHop style of the West Coast Swing:

Blues Style Swing – this is the REAL “dirty dancing”, the one you see in the movie at the teacher’s party. You might also notice that they are completely free-styling. That’s what we like!!!
